George W. Bush – NAACP Speech

“I consider it a tragedy that the party of Abraham Lincoln let go of its historic ties with the African-American community…for too long my party wrote off the African-American vote, and many African-Americans wrote off the Republican Party…history has prevented us from working together when we agree on great goals…I want to change the relationship.”

TRANSLATION:

I want to look tolerant/respectful of African-Americans, not for the black votes (no snowball’s chance in hell Republicans will get that vote anytime soon), but for all the guilty white suburban voters who don’t want voting Republican to be equated with mild racism.
