Rick Davis – McCain as Frontrunner

“We are a party that gravitates toward front-runners.” (New York Times)

TRANSLATION:

McCain is going to have to rely on being a perpetual front-runner because the party faithful will turn on him in a second if he shows any weakness in the polls.

Bill Clinton – Why Lieberman Lost

“Well, if I were Joe and I was running as an independent, that’s what I’d say, too,” Clinton said.  “But that’s not quite right. That is, there were almost no Democrats who agreed with his position, which was, ‘I want to attack Iraq whether or not they have weapons of mass destruction.’” (ABC News)

TRANSLATION:

Stop trying to hang on to my political coattails like a leach Joe.  I won’t be dragged down just because you’re too stupid.  Last time I do a charity apperance for an old friend…

TRUTH OF THE DAY – Clintons and Lieberman (8/8/06)

John Edwards – Troops Out Of Iraq

The former senator from North Carolina told reporters America should “make it clear (to Iraqis) we are leaving, and the best way is to start leaving. We should take 40,000 combat troops out now.” (AP)

TRANSLATION:

I’m going to keep moving more anti-war, little by little.  As long as I stay ahead of the other major candidates on the issue, I get credit for my position.  And by saying something a little knew every once in a while, I keep my name in the news.

Ari Fleischer – Katrina Failure

“The impact of Katrina was profound,” said former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer. “It caught a tired White House staff off guard and turned out to be one of the most damaging events of his presidency.” (Washington Post)

TRANSLATION:

The implication is we were too exhausted by Democratic attacks on Iraq to focus on Katrina. I hope that readers understand this, I’m used to talking in deliberately misleading phrases.

Hillary Clinton – Iraq Failures

“Yes, we hear a lot of happy talk and rosy scenarios, but because of the administration’s strategic blunders and, frankly, the record of incompetence in executing, you are presiding over a failed policy.

TRANSLATION:

You hear that anti-war people…I can criticize the war effort with the best of them.  I’m no Joe Lieberman!
