Rahm Emanuel/Bruce Reed – The Plan

We will never make progress by whining about what we’re against. It is high time to say what we’re for, what we stand for, and above all, what we plan to do. (Chicago Sun-Times)

TRANSLATION:

We don’t need any “master plan” bullshit, but we do want to add to the media story-line that this is like 1994 and putting out stuff like this helps add to our sense of inevitability.

Bill Clinton – Why Lieberman Lost

“Well, if I were Joe and I was running as an independent, that’s what I’d say, too,” Clinton said.  “But that’s not quite right. That is, there were almost no Democrats who agreed with his position, which was, ‘I want to attack Iraq whether or not they have weapons of mass destruction.’” (ABC News)

TRANSLATION:

Stop trying to hang on to my political coattails like a leach Joe.  I won’t be dragged down just because you’re too stupid.  Last time I do a charity apperance for an old friend…

TRUTH OF THE DAY – Lamont and Netroots (8/10/06)

The Lamont victory will embolden the netroots, which will lead to them overreaching. They should remember he only won by 4 points.

Ned Lamont – General Promises

“Families still dream of a land of opportunity. With your vote this evening, we’re going to start to make your dreams come true.’’ (New York Times)

TRANSLATION:

Nothing like a come-from-nowhere primary victory to make you say crazy, general promises that would sound disingenuous any other night.

Joe Lieberman – 2-Part Race

“As I see it in this campaign, we just finished the finished the first half and the Lamont team is ahead…but in the second half, our team — Team Connecticut — is going to surge forward to victory in November.” (New York Times)
TRANSLATION:

I need to set the CW/dynamic early that I have a right to challenge Lamont in the general election. Only losing by 4 helps me justify that, although it doesn’t help that there was such high turnout.

John Dingell – BP Pipeline Investigation

“The United States Congress has an obligation to hold hearings to determine what broke down here and what laws and regulations need to be improved to ensure problem pipelines like these are found and fixed earlier.” (Washington Post)

TRANSLATION:

We’re going to start holding real hearings once we get into power, so all you Republican business people be on notice. You better start showing us the respect we will soon deserve.

Joe Lieberman – Don’t Send a Message…

“The voters of Connecticut are realizing they want to send a senator, not just a message,” Mr. Lieberman said during a morning stop at a New Haven construction site. “If all the real Democrats come out and vote in tomorrow’s elections, you are going to make me Connecticut’s comeback kid.” (New York Times)

TRANSLATION:

Well, I’ve resorted to recycled John Kerry lines, I’m obviously desperate here.

John Thune – Passing on NRSC Chairmanship

“I’m going to take a pass. It’s not the right fit for me, at least not right now. I still have a daughter at home, and this would have meant missing a lot of her activities…and in terms of the stuff I have to focus on for South Dakota right now, I just didn’t think I had the bandwidth to do it all.” (Rapid City Journal)

TRANSLATION:

It looks like we’re going to get killed in the Senate in 2008 and I don’t want to be associated with that.  I have too bright a political future to waste it on a lost cause.
