Al Sharpton – Supporting Lamont

Calling Mr. Lieberman a “nice man,” Mr. Sharpton said nonetheless, “This is about the future of the Democratic Party.” (New York Times)

TRANSLATION:

I smell blood. And publicity.

TRUTH OF THE DAY – John Kerry (7/31/06)

John Kerry will never be President.

Mitt Romney – Big Dig

”I’ll get the blame for anything that goes wrong…but I’m sure tired of people who are nothing but talk. I’m willing to take action.” (New York Times)

TRANSLATION:

I’ve got a credible candidacy, but I need something more to have a chance at breaking out of the pack. I’m willing to take the risk of having control over the Big Dig, but I also want this risk to be recognized so I can cash in politically later if I pull it off.

John Kerry – In Iowa for ‘06

”Who you chose for your local races is going to have a profound impact on the country as a whole,” said Kerry, who was making his fourth trip to Iowa since the state’s leadoff caucuses in January 2004. He has been helping state-level candidates around the nation, and was in Story City for a $30-a-head brunch for Democrat Rich Olive, who is running for the Iowa state Senate. Kerry insisted he’s focused on helping other Democrats such as Olive win in 2006, and not on a potential run for president in 2008.

”I’m here because ‘06, not ‘08, is really important.” (New York Times)
TRANSLATION:

I could give two shits about candidates in Iowa, but it should make some Iowa politicians support me when I run in ‘08. I hope I’m not too transparent.

Karl Rove – News Media

”It’s odd to me that most of these critics are journalists and columnists…perhaps they don’t like sharing the field of play. Perhaps they want to draw attention away from the corrosive role their coverage has played focusing attention on process and not substance.” (New York Times)

TRANSLATION:

Time to soften up the media again so that they’ll put out some puff pieces of the Bush Administration to “prove” their fair.

Joe Lieberman – His Vulnerability

“Look, I could have told you this would be very close at the end. I know now it is very close.” (New York Times)

TRANSLATION:

People already think I’m a loser. I don’t want them to think I was an idiot as well.

TRUTH OF THE DAY – Money in Politics (7/28/06)

We will never be able to totally get money out of politics. It will just be a matter of what combination of rich politicians versus corrupt/easily influenced politicians we want.

Norm Coleman – John Bolton Nomination

“I’ve watched you work, I’ve visited with your colleagues. I want you to know you have my unequivocal, unhesitating support.” (Washington Post)

TRANSLATION:

We (Republicans) want to turn this nomination into a litmus test for being tough on terror. This (like judges) is an easy wedge vote that doesn’t require any money or near-term consequences. The man may have no diplomatic tact to save his life, but he adds to the image of strength versus weakness. No one is going to vote against a candidate because he/she supported this guy, all it will do is make Democrats more angry.

Immigration Lobby – Senate and House Immigration Bills

“Neither the House nor the Senate bill in current form can be effectively, fairly and wisely implemented,” said Rick Swartz, a Washington lawyer who has often coordinated legislative efforts for pro-immigration groups. “Therefore, better no law than a bad law.” (Washington Post)

TRANSLATION:

Best case scenario, neither of these bills pass.  By being against this though, we also give some cover to the Senate bill to make it seem more moderate.

Lieberman Advisor – Anti-Semitic Progressives

“There’s a small but vocal pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel and perhaps anti-Semitic faction of the Democratic Party,’’ said Dan Gerstein, a former Lieberman aide and informal adviser to the campaign. “It is a small minority but it is getting bolder, and even worse. There is a growing tolerance of it in the progressive community.” (New York Times)
TRANSLATION:

If we can at all make being anti-war seem anti-semitic, we can get all the Jews on our side.  And if we can REALLY link the two, we’ll get all the other liberals since almost all of them support Israel anyway. Thank G-d for those 5% of truly crazy liberals.
